What is negative space?

Created by Admin Situs Desain, Modified on Tue, 8 Apr at 11:48 AM by Vivian Lim

Negative space, also known as white space, refers to the empty or unused areas around and between the elements of a design. It doesn’t have to be white—it just means areas without content.

Rather than being wasted space, negative space plays a crucial role in design balance, visual clarity, and emphasis. It helps guide the viewer’s eye, improves readability, and allows key elements to stand out.

Why it matters:

  • Creates a clean and professional look

  • Enhances focus on important content

  • Prevents designs from feeling cluttered or overwhelming

  • Helps define relationships between design elements
